What is a reward credit card?

Rewards credit cards are a type of credit card that give you something back on your everyday purchasing.

If you regularly clear the balance of your credit card each month, you might want to consider if a rewards credit card could benefit you.

Are there different types of rewards credit cards?

Yes, there are. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular ones.

reward card types

Avid traveller?

Take off with rewards earned on eligible purchases that can be exchanged for air miles, upgrades, and hotel stays. Before you hit the road and apply, make sure you’re aware of the terms and conditions of the rewards programme; some redemptions may only be applicable with certain airlines or specific routes.

On point.

Certain rewards credit cards allow you to collect points on eligible transactions, which you can them redeem for high street vouchers, discounts, or experiences.

Cash? Have some back.

Cashback credit cards help you earn something back with each eligible transaction.

It’s important to read the full terms and conditions of your chosen credit card before you sign a credit agreement. There could be charges and fees to consider, which could end up outweighing any potential benefits.

How to use your rewards credit card

Using your rewards credit card works a little like this:

  • Make a purchase using your rewards credit card as you would normally.
  • Earn rewards with every eligible purchase.
  • Manage your credit card account by making at least the minimum repayment amount on time each month. To take full advantage of your chosen reward scheme, you may wish to clear the balance each month.
  • Keep track of your rewards on your monthly credit card statement.

Things to bear in mind

  • It could be tempting to spend more than you usually would to gain rewards quicker. Use your credit card sensibly and mindfully, and never spend more than you need to or can comfortably afford to repay.
  • If you do not make at least your minimum repayment on time each month, you could be charged a late payment fee. Your credit score could also be affected.
  • Some rewards credit cards charge an annual fee. Be sure to familiarise yourself with any fees and charges before signing your credit card agreement.
  • You could lose entitlement to your reward scheme if you are late making a repayment.

Who can apply for a rewards credit card?

We work with a large range of credit card providers, each of which have their own application criteria.

As a general guide, you can apply for a rewards credit card if you:

  • Are a UK resident with 3 years' UK address history;
  • Have a UK-issued bank account with a valid debit card;
  • Have a regular income paid directly into your UK bank account; and
  • Are over 18 years of age.

How can I apply for a rewards credit card?

If you're looking to compare rewards credit cards, you've come to the right place.

Making multiple applications directly with credit card providers could involve multiple hard searches which, over a short space of time, could have a negative impact on your credit score. You can avoid this by using our Eligibility Checker. Using soft search technology, our eligibility check will not be visible on your credit report to other lenders, and will not affect your credit score.

Our online application should take no longer than five minutes to complete.

We run a soft search on your information without impacting your credit score.

If we've been able to match you with one or more credit cards we'll show you your results. As well as the key information for each credit card, we will also show you your chance of approval.

Spotted a card you like? If you decide to make a full application you will be transferred to the lender's website. If you pass the lender's further checks, including a hard credit search, you will be sent a credit card agreement. Be sure to read this through thoroughly before signing.

Remember:

  • If you are pre-approved for a credit card this does not guarantee you will be accepted. You will still have to complete a full application, including a hard credit check.
  • The hard credit check carried out by the provider will show on your credit file and will affect your credit score.

Finding the best rewards credit cards for you

If you are confident that you are able to use your credit card sensibly and keep on top of repayments, a rewards credit card could help you earn some extra benefits when making your usual purchases. To ensure that you find the best credit card for you, carefully research the individual benefits before making any decision.
